Prescription Drug Plan

When you enroll in an Aetna medical plan, you automatically receive prescription drug benefits. You will pay a copay according to the type of drug dispensed (generic or brand-name) and whether or not the drug is listed on Aetna's formulary.

What is a formulary?

In administering the prescription drug benefits, Aetna uses a preferred drug list, also known as a formulary, which offers you and your doctor a choice of quality, cost-effective, generic and brand-name medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If the medications you take are not on the formulary, you should ask your physician to prescribe ones that are so you save on your copay. Click here to access Aetna's formulary. When prompted to "Select your Aetna Pharmacy plan type," select THREE TIER OPEN FORMULARY.

You have two options for filling your prescriptions:

  1. Fill short-term prescriptions (up to a 30-day supply) at a participating retail pharmacy. You can find a list of participating pharmacies by using DocFind®, Aetna's online provider directory.

  2. Fill long-term prescriptions (31- to 90-day supply) by using Aetna Rx Home Delivery®, Aetna's mail-order service. If you or a family member uses medication on a regular basis, Aetna Rx Home Delivery offers convenience as well as savings by allowing you to receive three months of your prescription for two months of copays. To get started, all you need to do is complete an order form, available at Aetna Navigator, and mail it to Aetna along with the original prescription (or your doctor can fax your prescription) and your copay. You will receive your medication 7 to 10 days after your order is received, and you can order refills by mail, phone or online.

Mail-Order Incentive Program
The mail-order service is a cost-saving program, therefore it is important that you take advantage of this feature for all your long-term prescriptions – those taken for 90 days or longer, for example, medications used to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol or allergies. If you fill a long-term prescription at a participating retail pharmacy instead of through Aetna Rx Home Delivery, you will pay more. Here is how it works:

You may purchase each long-term drug at a participating retail pharmacy three times at your regular 30-day-supply copay. Beginning with the fourth time, you will pay the mail-order copay for a 30-day supply. You will receive reminder letters from Aetna about the mail-order incentive program after your second refill and at periodic times thereafter if you continue to fill long-term medications at retail pharmacies.

Smoking Cessation Program
You are eligible for two 90-day supplies of the smoking cessation drugs listed below, subject to applicable copay, as long as they are prescribed by a doctor:

  • Chantix
  • Zyban
  • Buproban
  • Bupropion
  • Habitrol
  • Nicotrol inhaler

Aetna Healthy ActionsSM Rx Savings Program
This program allows you and any covered family member to pay lower copays for certain asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol medications.

The purpose of the program is to make these drugs more affordable so you do not need more costly treatment later as a result of skipping your medication. Western Union has invested in this new program because we hope that by improving the health of people with chronic diseases, we will save money in the long run for the company and all of our employees.

Eligible medications are determined based on various factors, including the cost impact to the company. If your medication is eligible, you will be charged the appropriate copay at the time of purchase. Rx Savings Program copays are up to 50% less than regular Rx copays. For example, if you take a generic high blood pressure medication, it would cost you $4 for a 30-day supply compared to $7 at the regular retail copay.

Specialty Pharmacy
If you or a covered family member needs an injectable or specialty medication that requires storage under special conditions such as refrigeration, or is not normally found at your retail pharmacy, you may be able to fill your prescriptions through Aetna Specialty Pharmacy. Your copays are the same as your other prescriptions. (Your medications will be mailed to your home; however, you will still pay the retail copay for a 30-day supply.)

Your first prescription should be requested by your doctor, but you may also have your new prescriptions filled by calling 1-866-782-2779. Medications will be sent to you within 24 to 48 hours of receipt of your prescription. After filling your first prescription, a patient care coordinator will call as a reminder a week before it is time for your next refill.
